Our Team
The Head Teacher and all our teaching staff have been carefully chosen for their experience and specialist knowledge in their individual subjects. High quality education depends on having the right number of teachers with the right skills and specialisms.

Ofsted Report
“Pupils appreciate the family feel of their small school and say it is a special place. Parents and carers are unanimously positive about the school — one parent described the school as ‘a truly wonderful school with empathetic, dedicated staff who put the children at the heart of everything.’”

Curriculum
We provide all children with broad and balanced learning experiences having regard for the National Curriculum, and additional subjects such as French, Spanish, Drama, Music, Art and Technology are taught.
There is strong emphasis on participation of all children in a range of sporting and outdoor activities. The importance of gaining competence with ICT skills is central to our teaching plan.
External professionals are invited to the school to provide expertise and enrich the curriculum. The curriculum is enhanced by a programme of external educational visits.
A range of teaching and learning styles are used to enable the best matched learning for each individual child.
Extra Curricular
A wide range of additional curricular activities are available as part of the extended school day, and charged for separately. External professionals are invited to the school to provide expertise and enrich the curriculum (e.g. musicians, performing arts teachers and professional sports people). Current after-school activities available are Spanish Club, Creative Club, Lego Club, Karate Club and Drama Club.
We also offer individual music lessons with an external qualified music teacher, which take place once a week during the school day.
School Day
As a general rule, the children do their core subjects in the morning. The remaining subjects take place in the afternoon. A copy of our timetable is available on request but is, of course, subject to change at any time in order to allow us to be spontaneous.
We wish to have the flexibility to maximise opportunities as they arise, for example, on a walk in and around the village we may decide to carry out topic-related map work, thereby extending the amount of time spent out in the local community.
Meal Times
All children are required to bring a packed lunch to school each day. Please do your best to provide a balanced school lunch — crisps and snacks are fine, but please do not include sweets or fizzy drinks. There are microwave facilities available at school, so if a child requires food to be warmed, please ensure it is in a suitable container with clear instructions.
A piece of fresh fruit is provided for each pupil at break time. Milk is provided for Reception children.
Nursery / Preschool
Our own preschool feeder, Millfield Nursery, is owned and managed by John and Liz Miller, Directors of Colston Bassett School.
Located three miles from the school at Cropwell Butler, Millfield is highly-regarded in the local area having been established for 35 years, and is the main feeder to our Reception class each year.
At Millfield, we feel that the first steps a child makes into the world of learning are crucial to their development and ability to realise their potential in later years. We place great importance on these early days, seeking to provide a learning environment which offers the individual child a very positive beginning. Our unique setting gives children the opportunity to learn both inside and outside as well as through adult led activities and through structured and free play.
